How Amalia, the Queen, saved the forest

Xylokastro, a town with a rich history, has undergone many changes over time. But amidst all the transformation, one thing has remained constant. Our breathtaking pine forest that extends along the sparkling sea. This verdant woodland has played host to many a distinguished figure throughout the years, from renowned artists and writers to prominent politicians and royalty. Each visitor who has traversed the forest's winding paths has left their own indelible mark on the landscape, creating a tapestry of captivating stories that are woven into the fabric of the place.

But what is the actual story behind this idyllic forest? How did it come to be and why is it so revered? The tale begins many years ago, when the coastline was still sparsely inhabited and the pine trees grew wild and free, reaching all the way to the present-day village of “Mertikeika”. However, as more people settled in Xylokastro and the population grew, the once-lush forest began to dwindle. The trees were felled for their valuable resin and timber, and the landscape gradually became more barren.

Yet, as if by divine intervention, one day Queen Amalia and King Otto made a fortuitous visit to the region during their extensive tour of the kingdom. The queen was heartbroken to witness the devastation of the once-great pine forest and immediately ordered that the cutting of trees be banned forevermore. Thanks to their intervention, the remaining pines were protected and today, Pefkias stands as a testament to the resilience of nature.

The ecological meaning and diversity of Pefkias

One of Pefkias' most remarkable features is its ecological diversity. It's an ancient natural pine forest that has remained intact, even as the surrounding area has undergone significant development. Pefkias is home to a rare habitat type of Aleppo pine, genetically distinct from the Aleppo pine found in other forests in the region and the country. This biodiversity has created a unique natural ecosystem, boasting a rich array of over 83 plant species. The trees have adapted to grow in sandy soil and withstand the salty sea air, making them a cherished and rare sight to behold.

But Pefkias is not only a natural wonder, but it also holds significant historical value. The legendary Villa Sikelianos, built by Angelos Sikelianos and Eva Palmer, stands almost at the end of Pefkias in Sykia. Over the years, it has attracted prominent literary, artistic, and political figures, including Nikos Kazantzakis, Dimitris Mitropoulos, and Katina Paxinou, among others. The famous Greek poet Konstantinos Karyotakis was so inspired by the pine forest that he wrote the poem "The Green Shore of the Homeland" during his stays in Sykia.
